Under the new contract the loss of automatic rights to claim locum reimbursement from the local PCT in the event of a GP principal absence due to ill health could mean an unexpected and significant cost burden for absent practitioners. The reimbursement is solely at the discretion of the local PCT, forcing those practices with a heavy reliance on this support to consider the impact of it not being available when they need to claim.
Even if locum reimbursement is available from the PCT, the funds provided are unlikely to be adequate to pay for a locum due to the rise in locum costs in recent years.
With a lack of any or sufficient locum insurance cover, the absent partner will have to fund locum costs from their partnership drawings, increasing the financial pressures.
